“Nanny” State Public Diplomacy

Fran Drescher has been named a new representative for U.S. public diplomacy. Ms. Drescher is an outspoken advocate for people living with cancer, and thus no stranger to public health campaigns. How might this translate into public diplomacy? Who knows? Did Cal Ripken and Michelle Kwan resonate with foreign publics? I don’t have much to say about this, other than perhaps I need a better agent. Or maybe U.S. public diplomacy is nearing a shark-jumping moment.

  • : must think broadly about interlocutors for diplomacy. Social media can help connect/identify.
  • Mex amb. Casamitjana : states suffering from legitimacy crisis for public policy. Sounds like Castells on network power.
